Signs That You May Have a Squirrel Infestation

Squirrels are a common wild animal that are typically harmless. However, they seek shelter in cold weather like any other animal, and can find their way into your home. Most commonly squirrels will find or create holes to access your attic, shed, garage, or other less-occupied areas of the home, often to keep their young safe, as well. Most signs of an infestation can go undetected for months, including:
  • Droppings: Fecal matter is one of the most common signs that you have a wildlife infestation, which can often be found where they are hiding, or sometimes near food sources, including your pantry.

  • Noises: Scuffling or scratching noises in the walls, ceilings, or specific rooms in the home are common with squirrel infestations, but can be difficult to hear. Pay attention during the winter or rainy seasons, and you may be able to hear these noises in your home before spotting evidence of an infestation.

  • Damage Inside the Home: Damaged air vents, chewed wires and insulation, teeth and claw marks, visible evidence of nests or wood chips are all examples of damage and evidence of a potential squirrel infestation.

  • Damage Outside the Home: Teeth and scratch marks on outdoor furniture and surfaces, chewed plants, torn open garbage bags or signs of attempted access to garbage cans, and holes in shingles and roofing indicate the possibility of a squirrel infestation

  • Foul Odor: While wildlife most commonly invade a home for shelter, squirrels can also find themselves stuck, ill, or simply too young to care for themselves. Foul odors can indicate that a squirrel or other animal is decaying somewhere in the home.

  • Indications of Water Damage: When squirrels hunker down in your home, their urine can appear as water damage, including bubbling and peeling in the ceiling and walls.

  • Garden Damage: Chewed or damaged plants, emptied or broken bird feeders, and footprints are common signs that squirrels are frequenting the area around your home and garden, and may be looking for shelter nearby.
